Omega Speedmaster Date 40 (ref. 3210.50.00) (Omega Caliber 1164, based on the Valjoux 7750) For those that desire the storied heritage of the greatest journey of mankind, and a budget-friendly smaller Moonwatch, with self-winding, a date complication, and most importantly, 100m of water resistance, look no further than this watch. Unlike the Speedmaster reduced with a Dubois-Depraz add-on, the Valjoux is a movement with a chronograph as part of its original design. It is a reliable workhorse, easy to service, easy to find watchmakers that know it and can be pretty precise too!Between the 861/1861 and the newer ETA/Dubois-Depraz movements, Omega used the ETA (Valjoux) 7750 for a while.
After years of wanting one I was finally able to afford this little speedmaster! It carries a valjoux 7750 (Omega 1152). The perceived quality is very good (a little surprised by the bracelet at first) but I find it even more beautiful in real than in the photos!Omega version of the ETA / Valjoux 7750. The new style Speedy Dates with the tri-compax dial layout and date at 4.30 use cal. 3304, which is also a modified Valjoux movement (a 7753, variant of the 7750) with rhodium finish adjusted to chonometer standards.
The watch is based on a Valjoux 7750, a movement that powered so many of the most popular watches in the world at the time, and was far more complicated looking than a normal Speedmaster – with pops of color not often seen on the traditionally stoic model.
Equipped with the Omega 1151, a Valjoux 7751 triple-date automatic chronograph with in-house branding, the 3520 simply requires more. More hands, more windows, more indexes, more. everything. The result borders on chaotic, and it’s certainly busy, yet works so well in its own way. By 1987, the automatics had taken on the classic Speedmaster shape, slightly non-symmetric, with twisted lugs and incorporating protective guards for the crown & pushers. Most of these contain versions of the Valjoux 7750 and are still in production. The exceptions are those with the Lemania 5100.
