Does anyone know why 904L steel scratches more easily? Its a softer stainless alloy - and, for that matter, 316/316L is really not all that great for abrasion resistance or strength either. But, any of the stainless alloys are a lot better than 14-18K gold for mechanical durability.

The reason people think 904L scratches more is because Rolex finishes their watches to such a high jewelry standard (both brush and polish finishes) that any hairline scratch stands out easily. 904L is not really any harder or tougher .

904L is an austenitic stainless steel. In comparison to 316L, its molybdenum addition gives it superior resistance to localized attack (pitting and crevice corrosion) by chlorides and greater resistance reducing acids and in particular its copper addition gives it useful corrosion resistance to all concentrations of sulphuric acid. Is it normal after a month or so of occasional use to have tiny scratches on the bracelet? My gen from 1998 definitely is full of them but I didn’t think it happened so quickly. It is not visible on the wrist.

The real benefits of 904 with regards to scratches is it’s luster. The steel is somewhat champagne in color, both in a brushed and polished finish. Scratches tend to blend. 316 is bright silver in it’s polished state and takes on a greyish hue when brushed.
